About the Catalogue

This catalogue represents the first time that the Lawrence Room Collection has been catalogued as a whole. It is partially based on four previous catalogues of individual collections, now housed in the Girton College Archives. Two of these catalogues – by Alice Lieder and Gwendolen Crewdson – were compiled by the collectors themselves, well before the material came to Girton. The other two catalogues – by Margaret Murray and Mildred Hartley – were created on behalf of Girton shortly after the Lawrence Room was founded in 1934. Details are as follows:
  1. Catalogue of Egyptian antiquities in the collection of Alfred Waterhouse (senior), created by Mrs Alice Lieder in May 1850. Archive reference: GCAR 8/4/13. NOTE: Not all these items came into the Lawrence Room.
  2. Catalogue of Egyptian antiquities in the collection of Gwendolen Crewdson, created in 1905 whilst travelling in Egypt. Archive reference: GCAR 8/4/2. NOTE: Not all these items came into the Lawrence Room.
  3. Catalogue of Egyptian Antiquities in the Lawrence Room, created by Margaret Murray in 1935. Archive reference: GCAR 8/4/3. NOTE: Sarah J. Clackson (née Quinn) began to digitise this catalogue in 1992.
  4. Catalogue of the Tanagra figurines in the Lawrence Room, created by Mildred Hartley in 1936. Archive reference: GCAR 8/4/4.
The current Filemaker Pro catalogue, following MDA and other professional standards, was developed by the Lawrence Room Committee in 2007. From 2008 to 2011, Imogen Gunn, of the Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, University of Cambridge, catalogued the collection as a whole and integrated the pre-existing catalogues. A web-based version was first made available in December 2011; full details from the on-site version are available to researchers upon request. The Lawrence Room Committee works to keep the catalogue up to date. To report glitches, make suggestions or for further information, please contact: lawrenceroom@girton.cam.ac.uk
